Lumber Yard

Model railroad layout, lumber yard detail.

I'm really proud of this little lumber yard scene. It features a bit of my first attempt at scratch building, and some techniques I just made up to see if they worked. The main building is a plastic kit. The small yellow building on the left end was modeled after a small part of a cement manufacturing plant that I took pictures of during a trip to Washington State. It's called the Southland Lumber Company because that was the decal I finally got to stick after many failed attempts with other decals.

The roofing tiles are made of fine-grit emery paper, attached with white glue, one tile at a time. The brown sliding door is plastic, scored with a razor blade then stained with brown paint. Barrel details are purchased units.

Lumber is simulated with balsa strips, glued together then tied with black thread. The entire structure was built "off-layout" on top of a piece of linolium tile. The tile was painted with cement colored paint, and the cracks and lines in the "cement" are drawn in with pencil. Ink and alcohol mixture was used to stain the cement.

This little scene was inspired by a field trip I took to a real lumber yard over in Pomona, CA. Use this link if you'd like to see my inspiration.
